5Excellent telescope for children and adults, alikeDec 25, 2008
By Eagle Vision
I purchased this telescope for my niece and I assembled this unit for Christmas day.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX

Carry case
Telescope
Finder
Tripod mount
25mm and 9mm lenses

ASSEMBLY

Assembly time took about 15 minutes. The most time consuming part was removing the base for the battery cover. It takes 4 AA batteries that are not included.

Once the batteries are installed, the base fits into the tripod. The lenses are easy to place into the telescope.

Once you set the height of the tripod, utilizing your level, you are ready to use this unit.

CONSTRUCTION

The tripod mount is sturdy with thick legs (thicker than other telescopes in its price range). Larger rubber eyepieces allow for more comfort. Control knobs are large and contoured allowing for users of almost any age to operate. The lens caps are hinged so you NEVER have to worry about losing the caps.

The carrying case is padded and compartmentalized for the tripod, telescope, and for each lens. There is a velcro fastener for each small compartment. It is a great carrying case.

USE

The finder has crosshairs which allow you to see your object of interest. Adjustment of focus is easy with fine tuning.

The main body of the telescope has fine tuning in a 360 degree direction. An elevation with a large know allows vertical adjustment for areas of interest.

There is a switch that allows visualization of the controls at night. The tripod is easy to adjust with thick legs and rubber mounted base.

I have utilized this for both land vision and night vision - its ease of use is its biggest asset.

VERDICT

Solid construction in an easy to use package.

I highly recommend this unit for the casual user and young child interested in astronomy (elementary school through junior high). This is a great introduction to the science of astronomy and birdwatching.

1Worst service everJan 31, 2010
By Beach Lover
The product itself is great, but it came in a plain brown box that didn't even fit the telescope and with part of it sticking out of the box. There were no instructions and no star chart. After 3 months of dealing with this company and filing a complaint with Amazon I am still having trouble with them. I will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau and today will file another complaint with Amazon. I would never order from this company again.

1Don't by Discovery Kid's products; they are cheap plastic junk that break.Mar 04, 2011
By Polly Koellner
Discovery Kid's products are designed to "look cool" in the box but they are cheap plastic junk. They break. What's worse is the manual states that they are warranted by Discovery Store Inc. but if you do not buy direct from Discovery Store, they will NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY!!! So what happens? You buy your kid a cool toy. They use it for a few weeks. Then it breaks. You have crying kids. You call Discovery. You don't have an order number, they tell you to get lost.

Don't buy this junk. It is guaranteed to break. Shop around and find something that is hobby quality or just select a different gift for you kid.

3Good children's telescopeOct 21, 2009
By G. Hager
This product was purchased for a five year old's birthday. The knobs and focusing dials are rubber coated and contrasting colors making them very fun to play with. The image quality is good for this range of telescope. Great tripod, sturdy. The map light and lit up dials are a plus for the kids. I would recommend for a first time telescope.
